What is a Root Canal Treatment?

It is a dental procedure to salvage a tooth that has been infected or injured. By removing the nerves and damaged pulp tissues, the pain and discomfort will significantly improve. Our body will then take over the healing process and restore the infected area to a healthy state.

Once the root canal treatment is completed, a solid foundation is established to restore the tooth to its full functionality and appearance.

There are a bundle of nerves and blood vessels at the centre of the tooth that give out sensations of hot, cold or pain signals. This is the pulp. It is hosted within a space known as a root canal. The number of root canals in a tooth varies, depending on the location of the tooth. Molars and incisors have different numbers of canals. If a tooth is injured or has severe decay or infection, the pulp can be damaged, and the nerve tissues may die. The result of a dying tooth will lead to infection from within the tooth. Sensitivity to hot and cold sensations is also a warning sign of tooth decay. It is highly advisable to visit the dentist for a detailed examination.

Even if the tooth structure protects the pulp, it can be damaged in a number of ways. These may include

  1. Trauma
  2. Tooth decay
  3. Infection
  4. Severe gum disease
  5. Chipped or cracked tooth
  6. Deep dental fillings

If a pulp is infected, without treatment, pus can form at the root tip, causing pain and swelling, which can result in bone destruction around the affected tooth. To resolve the infection within the pulp, a root canal treatment is necessary.

An alternative option to root canal treatment is the extraction of the affected tooth, followed by replacement with a dental implant or a dental bridge.

How is a Root Canal Treatment performed?

Before a root canal treatment, our dentist will conduct a detailed intra-oral examination, and X-rays will be taken to establish a diagnosis of the tooth. Our dentist will plan the course of treatment and discuss the procedures, time, and treatment fees involved with you. Upon obtaining your consensus, we will proceed with the agreed-upon treatment plan.

For the root canal treatment, our dentist will administer local anaesthesia within and around the treatment area. The tooth is then isolated with a thin sheet of rubber, known as a rubber dam, to protect your airway and prevent contamination.

Particles from entering your throat. The tooth is kept isolated and clean throughout the procedure to increase the success rate of the root canal treatment.

With the dental microscope, our doctor creates a precise access point to the various root canals within the tooth. The infected and damaged nerves and pulp tissues are removed from the pulp chambers with endodontic files. The root canal system is cleaned and flushed with disinfectants to eliminate any bacteria.

All the endodontic files are new and used exclusively for each individual patient.

If a second visit is required, a temporary filling is placed on your tooth to close up the entrance. This is to ensure that the affected tooth is completely sealed off and to prevent food particles from entering.

On the second visit, our doctor reopened the root canal’s entrance to perform another thorough cleaning before filling the cleaned canals.

Upon completion of a root canal treatment, your tooth will be symptom-free as the infection has been eliminated. The tooth will require a permanent restoration, such as a crown or filling, to restore it to its full function and aesthetics.

What is the cost of a root canal treatment in Singapore?

The cost of a root canal treatment in Singapore depends on which tooth requires the treatment. In general, a molar tooth will cost more than a premolar or incisor. The main determining factor is the number of root canals a tooth has. The more root canals and their complexity, the higher the treatment cost and the longer the treatment time required.

To provide a more accurate treatment quotation, our dentist will conduct a thorough examination, including X-ray radiographs, to advise you on the available treatment options and associated fees. We will only begin treatment after you have given your consent and understand the treatment plan.
