Gum Care for Pregnancy
It must be exciting to prepare yourself to get pregnant. While many women go for medical checkups, it may not occur to you that dental health is as important too.
At Smile Design Dental Practice, we pay special attention to our pregnant patients as well as those who are planning for a baby.
Hormonal changes are expected during pregnancy. However we will not know how much it will affect you, in terms of overall well-being, appetite, mood swings, body changes and oral condition.
It is common for pregnant women to experience swollen and bleeding gums. If you already have such issues before you get pregnant, chances for these issues to magnify during pregnancy are much higher.
With the change of appetite and easily swollen gums, it makes daily brushing and dental maintenance at home more challenging. As a result, this increases the chance of unhealthy gums and tooth decay.
We strongly advise you to get a comprehensive dental examination to address the dental issues before you get pregnant. It is ideal to prepare your body for a baby, and dental health is no doubt one of the important factors.
This includes the removal of impacted wisdom teeth before you prepare to get pregnant. The last thing you want is to have a bad wisdom tooth pain during pregnancy and you are left with little choice but to remove it. To undergo a wisdom tooth removal (through extraction or surgery) creates unnecessary stress to the mommy and baby.
After the removal of the wisdom tooth, painkillers and antibiotics will be prescribed. In this case, some of these medications are not ideal to be consumed during pregnancy.
We see our pregnant patients every 3-4 months prior to the labor date so that we can continue to look after their dental health and allow any mommy-to-be to have a peace of mind.
For every dental visit, we will check on the gum and maintain gum health to the best condition.
