Are you choosing the correct toothbrush and toothpaste for your child?

Think Again!

It is common for many to question the importance of brushing teeth in young children. Many have the misconception that the baby teeth will eventually drop, so parents do not pay much attention. In fact, parents ought to cultivate a habit of brushing with the child when the first tooth emerges.

Selection of a kid toothbrush

We always encourage parents to select toothbrushes with their child’s favorite cartoon characters on it. It helps to entice children to brush their teeth. The choice of bristles should be soft. The soft bristles are able to brush gently on the gums and their baby teeth.

It is common for toddlers to start munching and chewing on their toothbrushes. Parents should not feel stressed over it. Through the munching and chewing process, the bristles are actually cleaning the baby teeth. Parents just need to replace the toothbrushes more often.

Selection of toothpaste is equally important.

There is no problem with the usage of fluoride toothpaste. The issue only comes when young kids swallow them. When young children may not know how to spit out the toothpaste, it is advisable not to use toothpaste containing fluoride. Swallowing excessive toothpaste with fluoride may affect the adult teeth in the future.

Parents should only introduce toothpaste with fluoride when the child learns how to spit it out.

Dr Gordon recommends mint taste toothpaste for children when they had just converted to using fluoride toothpaste. This will encourage the child not to swallow the toothpaste.

Create a habit of brushing

To cultivate a habit of proper brushing is vital. Parents get to introduce the importance of maintaining good oral health and habits since young. Prevention is always better than cure. With good oral habits, it can help prevent possible decay.

  • Brush together as a family to enhance bonding
  • Set an example to brush twice daily
  • Teach proper brushing technique

Premature loss of baby teeth leads to the following

  • Unable to chew properly, resulting in limited choice of food intake and lack of nutrients for a growing child
  • The decay from the baby tooth may affect the adult tooth that is still in the gums
  • The baby tooth acts as a guide path for the adult tooth. Losing the baby tooth may result in misaligned adult teeth in future
  • Poor oral hygiene creates not only pain and discomfort to the child, and also high costs of treatments to the parents

Apart from encouraging proper brushing and good oral habits, we are here to help you to maintain oral hygiene with the professional routine dental checks for your child and family.

The food trap is one of the most common complains we hear. It happens during eating when food got trapped in between your teeth. You may have experienced some embarrassing moments where a piece of salad green is trapped in between your teeth are visible to others but you may not even notice it. Almost all of us needed a dental filling at some point of time in our lives. A dental filling is a restoration work done to our tooth that might have chipped off or decay. There are several choices of materials used to replace the partial missing tooth structure. Dental fillings will deteriorate over time, due to wear and tear, bad habits, or even simply they were not properly done in the first place.

Functions of fluoride Fluoride is a natural mineral that is found in our body (bones and teeth), and the natural environments such as water, soil, plants, rocks and even in the air. Fluoride is important to us especially to our teeth as it helps to strengthen the most outer layer, the enamel and fights against cavities. The most common products you used with fluoride in it are our water (in SIngapore’s context) and toothpastes. Prevent demineralization caused by the loss of minerals by strengthening the structure of tooth to prevent bacteria on tooth surface from ‘eating away’ the enamel Direct application of fluoride to reduce tooth sensitivity Increase the rate of remineralization Helps to fight against acid produced by plaque, blocking harmful enzymes that weakens the tooth enamel

Your choice of toothpaste may be different from your family members. Do not worry about being odd here. You are not alone. It is only right for you to find the correct toothpaste that suits your needs and oral condition. Likewise if you have young children at home. Their toothpaste is totally different from adults! We often place emphasis on selecting the correct toothbrushes for ourselves and our family members. It is important to get toothbrushes with soft bristles, so that we can clean more thoroughly, reaching most of the surfaces of our teeth. The selection of toothpastes is equally important to compliment the importance of maintaining routine oral hygiene.
