How to Prevent Tooth Decay in Children: A Parent’s Guide to Healthy Smiles
Tooth decay is one of the most common dental problems among children — but the great news is, it’s almost entirely preventable. Building good dental habits early helps your child maintain a healthy, confident smile and prevents painful cavities and costly treatments later. Here’s what every parent should know to keep those little teeth strong and healthy.

1. Start Dental Care Early
Oral hygiene should begin even before your child’s first tooth appears.
- For infants: Gently wipe their gums with a clean, damp cloth after feeding.
- When teeth appear: Use a soft baby toothbrush with a tiny smear of fluoride toothpaste.
Your child should have their first dental visit by their first birthday, or within six months of their first tooth erupting. This allows your dentist to check that teeth are developing correctly and give you personalised guidance on care.
2. Make Brushing and Flossing a Daily Routine
Once your child can spit, use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Teach them to brush twice daily for two minutes, especially before bedtime.
Flossing should start when two teeth touch. This removes plaque and food stuck between teeth that a toothbrush can’t reach.
3. Watch the Diet
What your child eats significantly affects their dental health. Limit sugary and sticky foods such as sweets, chocolates, biscuits, and fruit juices. These feed cavity-causing bacteria and lead to decay.
Encourage tooth-friendly snacks instead — fresh fruits, crunchy vegetables, cheese, and plain water are all great choices.
4. Avoid Bedtime Bottles with Milk or Juice
Letting your child sleep with a milk or juice bottle can lead to milk-bottle caries, a severe form of tooth decay. If your child needs a drink before bed, only offer plain water.
5. Visit the Dentist Regularly
Schedule a dental check-up every six months. Regular visits allow early detection of problems and preventive treatments such as fluoride applications or fissure sealants to strengthen your child’s teeth.
6. Be a Role Model
Children often copy what they see. Brush and floss together to make oral care a fun family routine. Use songs, colourful toothbrushes, or a reward chart to motivate them.
