How do you know if you grind your teeth?

What is teeth grinding (bruxism)?
Teeth grinding is a condition when you excessively grinds or clenches your teeth. This usually occurs at night when you are sleeping.
Most of the time, you as the ‘grinder’ or ‘clencher’ will not realize that you have this condition. Your sleeping partner will know. His or her sleep will be disrupted by the frequent and noisy sounds when you grind.
Do you wake up with aching jaws and stiff shoulders? You may even wake up with a headache! You seem to be ‘busy working’ through the night by grinding and clenching your teeth. With so many activities keeping you busy at night, you can’t avoid but to feel tired in the day. You woke up feeling as tired as before you went to bed.
People with teeth grinding issues do not only affect your daily lifestyle, concentration at work but also the one sleeping beside you are affected too. Your partner can’t get the quality rest as they could with your teeth grinding sounds.
To improve this situation, we have to understand what causes teeth grinding and what are the possible solutions to it.
Causes of teeth grinding
- Stress and anxiety
- Many people who are leading a stressful lifestyle and working life, one of the ways to release stress is through grinding teeth during the night. This is a subconscious action where you won’t be aware of until the ‘damages’ of teeth grinding start to surface
- Sleep disorders such as sleep apnea
- Studies have shown that patients with sleeping disorders like sleep apnea are often associated with grinding their teeth
- Abnormal bite, misaligned or crooked teeth - For many who have misaligned teeth will over-stress some of the teeth during teeth grinding in the night. In order to correct this problem, at Smile Design Dental Practice, we may advise you to seek orthodontic treatments to have a better alignment of teeth
What damages will it cause?
Many people questioned how bad can teeth grinding be. There is a range of mild to severe cases. Mild cases may be occasional grinders who only grind when you are stressed out during month-end while chasing your sales quota to severe habitual grinders who grind every other night!
The effects of teeth grinding issue may not surface immediately, but gradually. And it will only deteriorate especially if your teeth surfaces are starting to smoothen and flatten, exposing the dentine layer and your teeth start to feel sensitive.
Some people wake up with a dull headache perpetually almost every day. Imagine how lousy you will feel to start a hectic day with a headache!
Consequences of teeth grinding:
- Wearing off (flatten) the surface of multiple teeth (shortening the teeth)
- Chipped, cracked tooth
- Loosen tooth structure
- Cause tooth sensitivity with the exposure of dentin layer
- Gum recession
- Broken fillings
- Damage to the jaw joints
- Aching or tired jaws
- Soreness to facial area, stiff neck, shoulder muscles aches
- Frequent headaches around the temples area
- Sleep disruption

Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you — but more importantly, it reflects your overall health and wellbeing. Whether you want to restore your dental health after years of neglect or enhance your smile's appearance, you’re not alone. Many people feel self-conscious about their teeth, but the good news is that modern dentistry offers numerous ways to help you regain your confidence and maintain a healthy, beautiful smile for years to come.

Most people are aware that they should visit the dentist regularly, but many underestimate the importance of these routine visits. A dental checkup is not just about keeping your smile looking good—it’s essential to maintaining your overall health and well-being. Here’s why you shouldn’t skip your regular dental appointments.

Most people expect dental problems to improve after treatment. A filling, a crown, a root canal — these are meant to solve the issue and relieve discomfort. But sometimes, a dental problem lingers despite repeated visits to the dentist. If you are stuck with persistent pain, sensitivity, or discomfort that never seems to resolve, you are not alone, and you do have options.

Facing a recommendation for complex dental treatment—such as root canal therapy, dental implants, orthodontics, or full-mouth rehabilitation—can be overwhelming. These procedures often involve significant costs, time, and long-term impact on your oral health. It is natural to feel uncertain or even skeptical. In such situations, seeking a second opinion is a wise and responsible decision.

Everyone notices a great smile. It radiates confidence, leaves a lasting impression, and can even change how you feel about yourself. The best part? You don’t have to be a celebrity to achieve one. With proper care and a few lifestyle changes, anyone can enhance their smile. Here’s a guide to some effective ways to improve your smile!

Almost all of us needed a dental filling at some point of time in our lives. A dental filling is a restoration work done to our tooth that might have chipped off or decay. There are several choices of materials used to replace the partial missing tooth structure. Dental fillings will deteriorate over time, due to wear and tear, bad habits, or even simply they were not properly done in the first place.

What is a dental treatment plan? A dental treatment plan is a detailed plan that the dentist documents his findings after an oral examination. It reflects the current condition of each tooth that may require treatment. This treatment plan gives you a clear idea of the ideal and recommended treatment options and treatment fees. You will also know how long each treatment will take so that you can better plan your dental treatments into your schedule. In Smile Design Dental Practice, we conduct a thorough tooth-by-tooth examination, taking photographs with our intraoral camera and microscope. After the examination and dental charting, our dentists will share with you your current oral condition and customize a treatment plan. We listen to your needs and concerns, understand your considerations on time and budget. The treatment plan is customized to suit your considerations.

Many people pay more attention to adult teeth as the adult teeth will accompany us throughout the majority of our lifespan. While this is true, it is also very important to pay special attention to our baby teeth. Toddlers who are teething at this stage, are also starting to take in semi-solids and converting from liquid to solid food. Our baby teeth play a vital role here to chew well so that the food get digested properly, and absorb nutrients for growth.
